Filming Parkway & Columbia's "Weathering" Music Video

We were on already a tight timeline as we loaded up the car to shoot footage for “Weathering”, the first single off Parkway & Columbia’s upcoming album. We had a little more than a week before the band left for tour, but that warm Saturday was the last verifiably clear and sunny day up through then, and that sun was going down fast.

The setup wasn’t pretty (or comfortable) but it held in place and gave us the look we wanted.

The ride-along style video we’d been planning was simple enough on a technical level. All we had to do was stuff a tripod in the back of a car and tape Tyler and Winston driving down rural Michigan roads at sunset, but only left us a ninety minute window between the sun starting to go down and the sky going completely dark.

We’d decided to set the video on some back roads in the Pinckney area and film it a series of long takes and use all the best pieces of them for the final edit. Like a lot of Parkway’s work, we wanted an organic, nostalgic quality to the image, and decided to use a vintage wide angle lens, which gave us an attractive softness and flared flatteringly against the bright sunlight.

Warm colors were emphasized and blooming flares let us boost contrast without losing detail inside.

Filming began smoothly, up until the dog leaned over, lurched, and was carsick all over driver seat in the first take. In a spectacular case of “just keep rolling” attitude, Tyler managed to keep it together up through the end of the take, but sadly, in the edit, it couldn’t be salvaged. You don’t see any of the puke, but, as seen below, you can tell what’s going on.

If you look very closely, you can see Tyler realizing what Winston’s leaving in his lap.

We filmed a few more full takes, but with the sun going down and traffic worsening, we packed things in, taking just enough long and winding roads on the way home to get Winston carsick once again, in the exact same spot. Tyler wasn’t pleased.
